CHPR SAGA

We decided in 2008 to be the first modellers daft enough to build the Cromford and High Peak Railway all the way from Cromford to where it joined the Derby to Manchester main line at Whatstandwell. It seemed sensible to build it in stages. Wiring follows the approach used in the distant past without computers in the locos! We decided to build independent Modules with a double track main line and two Storage Boards to shoot trains each way through the modules. The Storage boards were built and tested in 2009, with electrics designed by me and approved by Martin Day – bless him. The two SBs are named Derby and Manchester. To pass information between SBs and Modules, 9 pin Dsub plugs and sockets are used. Pin 1 is common and pins 2 and three are Up/Down feeds. Pins 8/9 are “don’t send a train” Up/Down respectively. And now for the latest. The SBs were working before the last Clubroom move but after the move they didn’t. Pin 9 was getting set when trying to send a train to Manchester SB. There was nothing on the Manchester SB’s pin 9, and the source of the feed was the Derby controller, so I spent many Tuesdays checking all “pin 9” wiring on the Derby SB without joy. In sheer desperation, I then checked the plug on the Manchester SB and found that pin 3 was connected to pin 9 at the plug but not at the cable source! New plug and cable fitted 29th Sept 2015, PROBLEM SOLVED! DOG (Doddery Old Graham)...
