ARTICLE 50 AND BEYOND – EAST MIDLAND MEP ANDREW LEWER COMMENT
“A momentous day and a welcome end to the waiting, with much hard work ahead of us,” says East Midlands MEP Andrew Lewer MBE as Article 50 is triggered.
“It has taken almost nine months to get to this point and there is a tough and bumpy road ahead. But I firmly believe we can achieve a deal that is good for the UK and good for the EU.
“Our Prime Minister has a robust set of principles and objectives that give clarity to the UK’s position as well as excellent form as a successful negotiator when she was Home Secretary.”
Andrew believes Brexit offers real opportunities to look closely at what we want a future UK to look like.
“The EU missed the opportunity to truly reform and prevent Brexit. Hopefully, our June 23 decision means that the EU will listen to other member states who share our concerns about the continuing expansion of federalist policies.
“Now we have the chance to revitalise, reform and improve. It is an opportunity to rationalise and modernise rules and regulations,” he continued.
“We should not forget we have the chance to change, to learn from past mistakes and improve all our futures. With Article 50 now triggered, we begin that journey.”
As a former county council leader, Andrew went on to say he would continue to press the case for a bigger role and greater responsibilities for reformed local councils.
“It is our moment to restore local sovereignty. To restore local control over local spending especially now that many current EU powers and funding pots will be returning to us.
“There is a huge job ahead for everyone involved. I hope now, we can end the bickering and that Jean Claude Juncker and others will not harm their own economies in their bid to punish the UK for daring to leave.
“It is time to settle down to doing what is right for the citizens of the UK and the EU.”
