Keep the Langar waste recycling site open!

Keep the Langar waste recycling site open!

Nottinghamshire County Council have announced that they plan to close the household waste recycling centre at Langar as part of their 2014 budget cuts.

The centre is a well used facility for residents of Langar, Barnstone, Cotgrave, The Cropwells, Bingham, Radcliffe on Trent and other villages in the area. It is the only facility in the area that is well used, efficient and user friendly.

These plans have come to light to local residents although the county council has committed to increasing recycling over the next few years and to make these sorts of facilities available to everyone.

Although cuts have to be made by the council, the closure of the centre will cause some inconvenience to residents and users across the villages and possible encourage fly tipping.

Councillor Richard Butler, who represents the Cotgrave division, has said “When I was the Cabinet member for the Environment up until last May, if this had been suggested to me, I would have thrown the idea out straightaway!

“Closing it will not actually save money in the greater scheme of things.”

A petition has be uploaded this website to help keep the recycling site open. With nearly 400 supporters already, it seems like this centre is a big part of recycling.

If you would like petition against the centre being closed then sign the petition via the link above.

  1. From time to time we all have items too big to put in the wheelie bin. At such times the tip is a god send. Also through out the year there are times when you have more waste than the bins can cope and again a visit is necessary.

    • Have the Council actually demonstrated cost savings? As a local resident and a frequent user of the recycling centre I would like to know how much as a tax payer it would have cost per household to keep it open. Far less I would guess than the additional fuel costs incurred in seeking an alternative. Do the council not believe in consultation with the public?

  2. Closing the langar recycling point is going to be a very bad thing for Bingham and the whole area, this is a well used facility.if it closes fly tipping will be rife and it will cost the tax payers a great deal more than it would to keep it open.
    Don’t close this facility.

  3. Please keep the Langar Waste Site open, it is a well used and well run site. It’s closure will I believe lead to fly tipping which will cost more to clear up.

  4. A decision to close the Langar tip os short sited. The tip has a good recycling record with helpful an accessible staff. Adding to the distance we need to travel will increase the carbon footprint, reduce recycling and increase fly tipping. Overall, I’m sure that costs will increase.

  5. Closing the Langar tip is false economy as it will lead to fly tipping which will cost the council and taxpayer more to deal with. We are encouraged to recycle but the closure of the tip will take away a major part of this recycling.

As a taxpayer I would like to continue to ‘pay’ for this facility for the community and of course myself.

  6. I simply do not understand the logic behind the decision to close this facility. It is well run, used by hundreds of people. Does the Council not realise that some people, instead of making the journey to West Bridgford, might decide to dump their rubbish elsewhere, i.e. the countryside; if that happens then we the taxpayer will have to fork out higher council tax to pay for the removal of such rubbish. I urge the council to re-think, and not close Langar Tip.

  7. The Langar tip provides an excellent service for thousands of people in Radcliffe, Bingham and the numerous large and small villages in the Vale of Belvoir. The short-sighted decision to close it will have very significant social cost in terms of the inconvenience and difficulties that this will impose on thousands of people. Carbon footprints will rise markedly as people travel much greater distances to other tips, raising the financial cost of disposing of garden waste and other rubbish. The economic cost to the various councils and, therefore, to the council tax payer will rise as the costs of clearing fly tipping rise as a direct consequence of this very silly decision. Show some political courage – not weakness – and reverse this ill- considered policy decision.

  8. The Lanagar tip serves a wide community and number of households and is well utilised by many. I thought the council was trying to encourage recycling – closing Langar would reduce our recycling and there would be more fly tipping. Too much investment and services are centred around West Bridgford, we do not want to be traveling into WB to recycle. Keep Langar open

  10. In the 5 years I have lived in Bingham I have seen it grow considerably and to close Langar tip would be a huge mistake. This would encourage tipping and create a very messy landscape.

  11. Please do not close the Langar tip. We need the opportunity to recycle locally. If it closes the petrol to drive somewhere else is not good for the environment. I would probably end up putting more stuff in my black dustbin

  12. I’m appalled that Langar recycling centre is due to close shortly as it is always busy when I go and means that people currently using it will have to drive to Calverton or West Bridgford instead which are an unreasonable distance to travel to deposit waste. I fear that this will inevitably lead to people fly tipping, especially their garden waste which they can’t fit in their bins which will cause issues in the countryside. Do we really want to end up like some other countries where waste is deposited in any old place.

  13. Last night (11/2/15) we were told on the news that Britain was running out of rubbish tips. Leicestershire tips are due to all be filled within the next 5 years. It does not therefore make any sense to close the one in Langar as within a few years it will need to be reopened or a new site found with all the additional costs that will involve. There will no doubt have to be an expensive enquiry and all the locals will then be protesting that they don’t want a tip on their doorstep!

  17. I agree with all comments made, I use the site regularly. the huge catchment area of this site and the number of people using the facility, causing queueing, is going to inconvenience everyone and at what cost. What are we to do with the rubbish anyway. West Bridgford site is no good at all.

  18. Please accept this e mail as my strongest objection to Langar Waste Disposal proposed closure. This will be detrimental to the area and in my opinion will lead to fly tipping items around and about in the countryside thus providing the council with un budgeted expenditure. Please keep this facility open.

  19. There is already an increase in fly tipping and that is before its closed. Surely the cost of collecting flytipping will cost more. The langar site recycles most of the rubbish taken there!

It really is a bad move.

  21. The closure of Langar trip will encourage fly tipping. I use this site regularly, and have only just returned from one of my visits.
Today the site was “buzzing” I was no 7 in the queue. How can closure be justified, I am told will have to go to Bottesford, on the 3 occasions I have been there it was not open.

Who ever came up with this ludicrous idea should think again – WE NEED LANGAR TIP

  22. Let us hope that common sense prevails and Langar tip is kept open! The amount of rubbish dumped in our countryside is already disgusting. The closure will only cause fly tipping to increase and this should not be allowed to happen!

  23. Langar tip is an excellent recycling centre that I use regularly and when I have been it is always busy so is used regularly by others too.

As Bingham increases in size as proposals for increased housing show then more people will need to use this facility.

It is essential to keep the tip open to meet rising demand and to avoid dumping in hedge rows and congestion at other tip sites.

I do hope the council will see sense and reconsider a decision to close it down.

  24. The closure of this facility will lead to fly tipping!! The tip is well run and is of much value to our local community, and just incase you haven’t noticed, Bingham is still developing. We are encouraged to recycle our waste and some idiots have come up with the idea to close our valuable recycling tip!!!!…KEEP LANGER TIP OPEN PLEASE.

  25. It’s absolutely ludicrous to close down our recycling tip. If it closes it will encourage fly tipping. Hundreds of local householders rely on this recycling facility and some half wits are seriously considering the closure of our valuable recycling tip. We are encouraged to recycle and they want to close ours down. Then where would we go? hundreds of vehicles would have to travel miles to another recycling tip that would not cope with the additional volume. Do not close langer recycling tip please.

  26. you are leaving yourself wide open for a surge of fly-tipping if you close langar tip. I live in East Bridgford and have used langar for years and I am also disabled so where will I be able to get rid of my large recycling goods now.

  27. This is an extremely active well used facility. It’s loss will decrease the amount of recycling, increase the chance of fly tipping and stretch other facilities. Why not look more closely at how the site could generate revenue – the restriction on not accepting business waste that has a value when recycled (metals, fuel materials etc) for example, seems a missed opportunity.

  28. My wife and I are appalled by such a short sighted decision.
We note approval has been given for another 1000+homes to be
built here.So on the one hand they can approve of massive
expansion of Bingham, but then see fit to close down a basic
amenity, and one that will be needed even more in the future!!

  29. This is an inadmissible short sighted false economy.
The county is already filthy, with detritua lining the hedgerows and ditches. The closure of this excellent facility will further add blight to the countryside.
A system of triage functions at the recycling facility, simple, effective, and cost efficient.
Do not be niave – Once this site ceases to function. fly tipping will become commonplace – this is unsightly costly and time consuming to remediate.
Furthermore; as all flytipping goes to landfill, there will be no triage, a substantial cost to the council to remediate the mess and of course the lanfill tax to be added to all the waste recovered, that is not paid on recycled materials. Is this going to be the reason (excuse) for pushing up the council tax in 2016, or will some other essential service get the chop?
The other recycling options are too far away, too congested, too small and simply non-starters for those who live in the Vale – so come on Council, use your brains (?) grow a spine, make an intelligent decision keep it open.

It is a community facility we cannot do with out.
To close it will only encourage folks to fly tip as it is too far to go to Nottingham or Calverton
