Harker’s Farm Shop in Clipston On The Wolds have taken on a new apprentice butcher. Joe Drew from Bingham joined the Farm Shop team four weeks ago after leaving school this year and he is already a ‘dab hand’ at making their home made burgers.
Owner Ruper Harker has said that it has taken a long time to find someone like Joe.
“These days, becoming a butcher is not a fashionable job – not many 16 years old would consider it. But he is enthusiastic and showing a great interest. If he sticks at it he could have a successful career in front of him. We have a very experienced team at the Farm Shop, most of our butchers have been in the industry for over 25 years.”
Rupert continues to say – “Unfortunately there are very few trainees coming into the butchery industry. The average age of a butcher is now 62 in the UK. If we are to keep the nation fed in sausages we need to do all we can to encourage a new generation to continue the craft.”
